Welcome to Newtown, Sign on Enmore Road
It is the vibrancy of the famous King Street. The variety of an all over the world cuisine. The singularity of individual shops, bars, cafés. And if nothing else the diversity of society and culture living together in the multicolored suburb of Newtown. And the suburb wouldn’t be as interesting without the people making it unique.

Housefront on King Street
Newtown was originally settled in the 1850s and the suburbs name primarily was used for the New Town Store who served travelers back in those days. Today Newtown is called to be one of Sydney’s most vibrant suburbs, offering a good variety of cafés, bars and shops. The suburb of Newtown belongs to both, the Marrickville Council as well as other parts to the City of Sydney Council andand is just about 4 kilometers out of Sydney’s CBD, well connected to the city with over five bus services and the Newtown Train station just at the fork of Enmore Road and famous King Street.
Tradition in music, art and theatre

Famous King Street
Offering more than 25 pubs, ten theatres, 15 live venues and cabarets: Newtown has a wide range of different locations to go out, have dinner or a couple of drinks. With its more than 160 cafés and restaurants with cuisines from as many as 23 different cultures in the world, Newtown always is worth the visit. Several events taking part throughout the year make it an interesting spot even for those who aren’t living close. The Newtown Festival in November, the 2042 Art on the Street Festival or the Marrickville Cultural Festival in September, just to name a few, attract visitors and locals alike.

Shops and people - a crowded melting pot
Longest continuous shopping strip in Australia
Newtown also offers interesting shopping possibilities, having more than 200 different shops located on or near King Street, making the road to be the longest continuous shopping strip in Australia. People should not expect to find well known international chains or companies at King Street, though. Even if there is a few, Newtown is to be alternative enough to offer a grate range of unique and independent stores with original creations.
Open-minded multicultural melting pot

Multicultural diversity
Not only the cafés, bars and shops but the people alike make Newtown to this interesting mixed place where one can meet several cultures, artists and different characters just by walking into a pub or down the street. Newtown is famous for being gay- and lesbian-friendly, too, which attracts many homosexuals who prefer living in this area rather than on gay Oxford Street.
